Utilising Downtime for Business Owners
Being the owner of a small business is an incredibly rewarding way to earn a living, but it can also be one of the most challenging with its fair share of stressful times. This can be even more challenging if you are running a one-person operation or you only have a handful of employees to delegate tasks to. While it can often feel like taking time out to look after yourself could lead to lost business, it’s essential for both your physical and mental health and, ultimately, it will make your business stronger in the long run.
Here we look at some of the biggest reasons why downtime is so important for business owners.
Take care of your health
Taking time out from running your business will give you the space you need to focus on your own health. If you are stressed and tired for too long you will find that this will take a toll on your body and your mind, and when you become unwell your business is likely to suffer. Each week, carve out some time to get some exercise. It can be as simple as taking a walk or cycling or you may find a regular gym class you enjoy. Exercise has been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of stress and, of course, being physically fit will make you less susceptible to illness.
It’s also important to give your brain the care it needs to continue performing at its best. Drinking water and getting fresh air will help you to recharge through the day and many people find playing online games, such as those on Lumosity, to be a great way to give yourself a break from the business while keeping the brain active.
Reconnect with your loved ones
When you are at the helm of a busy business it can be difficult to spend quality time with your friends and family, but you should try to make this happen as much as you can. Reconnecting socially and reminding yourself of the support you have and why you’re putting so much into the business can be a great way to motivate yourself during difficult periods.
Feed your personal interests
While it might not feel like it, there are more aspects to life than running your business. While it’s important that you give it the time and attention it needs to grow, this shouldn’t come at the expense of who you are as a person. Now and again, take a day to do what you enjoy, whether it’s watching sports and placing bets on Unibet, going shopping, fishing or knitting do something to unwind. Refocusing your mind on something positive can be a great way to alleviate stress and enable you to return to the business feeling refreshed.
Get the sleep your body and mind need
It’s crucial that you get enough sleep on a regular basis in order for your body and mind to be able to function. You may not realise how much a lack of sleep can affect your health, but it can have severe consequences including making you more susceptible to stress. Give yourself at least eight hours a night to rest properly. If you have trouble falling asleep, take a look at this advice from the NHS.
